A lifelong passion has resulted in a thriving New Plymouth business collecting several national awards for its work.
Showtoys is a New Plymouth parts supplier and custom bike builder and a one-stop-shop for all Harley needs. The husband and wife team of Bruce and Dana Fuller started the business four years ago. They can do everything from servicing Harleys to customising and building one from the ground up.
“I’m a big believer in doing what you know well and sticking to that,” Bruce says. “We’re not just a normal bike shop, we provide a very niche service that’s personal to our customers.”
Taranaki has a growing community of Harley enthusiasts; all keen to take care of them and show them off. All bikes need servicing, and in the past that often required rides to Hamilton or Fielding for the closest Harley dealership, but it’s no longer necessary.
As well as being a convenient, quality local option, Showtoys typically has a much faster turnaround on services compared to others.
“We can pretty much always service a bike within a week of someone calling us. It can be a couple of months’ wait to get into an out-of-town dealership, which is a long time for some people.”
They work with all manner of Harleys, with servicing starting from $299. They take care of everything from display motorbikes for private collections to older Harleys with more sentimental value.
“Coming into the summer riding season, we’re seeing people start to think about getting their motorbikes looked at,” Dana says. “Getting it done correctly brings a big peace of mind, so when people are going out for a ride, you know it’s all taken care of.”
Bruce and Dana are fast growing a reputation as one of the country’s leading Harley building and customising businesses. They’ve taken out two Best Bagger awards in the New Zealand Motorcycle Show for custom builds this year and last year, and they’re also responsible for a handful of customisations that haven’t been seen in New Zealand.
“There’s a reason we call it Showtoys – we want everything we do to be show quality,” Bruce says. “We’re known for fitting square pegs into round holes. When someone else says they can’t do something, we’ll go out of our way to think outside the box and make it work.”
“Every bike is unique. We follow the American market closely so that when we build a bike, we’re on top of the latest trends that can take a couple of years to catch on in New Zealand.”
“We’ve been fortunate to turn a passion into a business, and that shows in the meticulousness we put into everything we do,” Dana says. “It’s a joy to work on these bikes, and when someone drops their Harley off we give it our full concentration so when they pick it up, it’s as good as it can possibly be.”
